Beijing(sometimes referred to as Peking): The Capital of the People's Republic of China. The population is over 12 million people. It is located in the northeastern area of the country. Along with being the seat of government, Beijing offers a wide variety of cultural and historical places of interest, among them Tiananmen square, The Forbidden City, The Imperial Palace and many museums, the zoo and many other places of interest.

Hong Kong: Often called "The Pearl of The Orient", Hong Kong is certainly one of the most beautiful cities not in Asia, but in the entire world. Hong Kong has a population of 6 million people. It is located on the southeastern coast of China. In 1997 it was returned to Chinese rule from Great Britain.

Hong Kong is a major international city. It also has one of the largest and best harbors in the world. It is a mecca for shopping and has a wide variety of international restaurants catering tastes from all over the world.

Macau: With a population of about one a million people, Macou is situated at the mouth of the pearl River Delta. Macou is currently under the sovereignty of Portugal. It will be turned over to China in 1999. Negotiation between the governments are currently under way to settle all of the details of transitioning the government. The largely smooth transition of Hong Kong to PRC control, lends confidence to a similar successful transition.

Nanjing:

Shanghai: With more than 14 million people, Shanghai is the largest city in China and one of the largest cities in the world. Shanghai is currently undergoing a major re-construction designed to make it one of the jewels of the Orient. This literal transformation is evident by the overwhelming reconstruction and the presence of thousands upon thousand of construction cranes.

Suzhou:

Xi'an: Home of he Terra Cotta Warriors, and once the starting point for the Silk Road. Xi'an is one of the the most popular tourist attractions.It is the capital of Shaanxi Province in the central area of China.

Here is some key info:

• 1.2 BILLION people(or there about)

• The growth rate has slowed to less than 1% per year, due largely to laws limiting children to one per couple.

• The vast majority of live on the eastern and southern areas.

• Population density as high a 3,000 people per square mile in the cities.

• In an effort to control the population growth, couples are allowed to have only one child. This policy has had success in the large cities and more affluent areas where monitoring and control is more manageable.In areas further away from Beijing and in the more remote the area, it has had less success.

• There are a large number of abortions in China, partly as a result of the one child per couple limit. Some couples have ultrasounds to determine the sex of the infant(boys are preferred) and have an abortion if the fetus is female.

• Second children are possible, but at a very high expense/penalty.

• Population figures for provinces and major cities are readily available on the net. Watch out for old sources if you need current and precise numbers.
